NFPA Fire Extinguisher Class A, B, C, D and K

Extinguisher Class and Symbol Markings

Different types of fires require specific types of fire extinguishers to be effectively controlled. It is crucial that the fire extinguisher used matches the class of fire being fought. There are five classes of fires, each requiring a different type of extinguisher:

  1. Class A: Fires involving ordinary combustibles such as wood, paper, and cloth.
  2. Class B: Fires involving flammable liquids such as gasoline, oil, and grease.
  3. Class C: Fires involving electrical equipment and wiring.
  4. Class D: Fires involving combustible metals such as magnesium, titanium, and sodium.
  5. Class K: Fires involving cooking oils and fats typically found in commercial kitchens.

Using the correct type of fire extinguisher is essential for effective fire suppression and safety. Always ensure that your fire extinguishers are appropriately rated for the potential fire hazards present in your environment.

See Fact Sheet from NFPA for the symbol that matches each class

Each class of fire is identified by a specific symbol. For detailed symbols and additional information, refer to the NFPA Fact Sheet. Ensuring your fire extinguishers are correctly rated and properly maintained is crucial for effective fire safety.

NFPA Fire Extinguisher Standards

Fire Extinguisher Placement: Accessibility and Visibility

To ensure safety and compliance with NFPA standards, fire extinguishers must be strategically placed in required occupancy locations (see fact sheet for locations). For optimal effectiveness, fire extinguishers should be easily accessible and visible at all times.

Proper placement not only facilitates swift access in case of a fire but also ensures adherence to safety regulations and standards.

Placement Regulations:

The weight of the fire extinguisher plays a key role in the placement of extinguishers.

An extinguisher which weighs more than 40lbs (18.14 Kg). The top of the extinguisher cannot be higher than 3.5ft from the ground.

An extinguisher which weighs less than 40lbs  (18.14 Kg). The top of the extinguisher cannot be higher than 5ft from the ground.
